Boards 4 Sale

I have a few boards for sale. All great boards, I just haven't been riding them since I had my amputation and they are just taking up space. If you are interested any of them please email me at robertwdonnelly@gmail.com , more pictures are available upon request.

6'9 Christenson C-unit- $650 Opaque gray resin tint both sides, Polished Gloss. 8" Larry Allison Flex fin

I can count on 2 hands how many times I've ridden this board only because I got it shortly before my amputation. This board is a blast in knee high peelers to overhead.

6'8" Shrosburger quad- $500 Clear Sanded Gloss. Lokbox setup with, Mandala AK4 template finz. This is not your typical Shrosburger it has a flatter rocker and is a little bit wider. It has a nice subtle single into double concave out the tail. This board like the C-unit has been used only a handful of times due to my injury. These Pics were taken when the board was new. It is still in incredible shape only difference would be some wax!

10'0" Diamond Tail Shaped by Bill Shrosbree- $700. Similar to the Tudor Diamond Tail but with a little v in the tail. This board was made out of Bill's last long Clark Blank with a 3/8" Cedar Stringer. I believe it's 3" thick, may be more. Board also has a pretty gnarly Fabrik inlay where the kneepatch is. Has a Clear deck and midnight blue resin tint on the bottom, Polished Gloss finish and a light olive green pinline around the cutlap and inlay. To make this board even better you may choose from a Greenough 10" 4A or a 10" Miss Lucy for the single fin box. This board performs awesome! Extremely responsive and super smooth. Has a nice nose concave and noserides like a dream. I could hang heels on this when I was pushing 225lbs. Has one ding on the rail repaired at Joe Ropers.

And Lastly my very Coveted 9'8" Model T. I almost sold this last year but got some insulting low ball offers so I took the ad down and kept it. I think $800 is more than fair for this beautiful custom Inside Avocado Polished Gloss Resin Tint. Blue Pinline and a glassed in clear Model T fin. Resin Leash loop! fin and Deck Patch! You know you want it, go ahead and pull the trigger.

Only reason the Model T is up for sale again is because I haven't really been riding it. I started out back on it after my amputation but since I got leash loops placed on my Pig and Flexpig I've mainly been riding those. Sorry for the poor lighting quality in the pics. I turned the flash off so it wouldn't mess up the picture.

Again if you are interested email me at robertwdonnelly@gmail.com . If you do not live in the San Diego to LA county region and would like one of these little Gems shipped I'll bring it up to Moonlight and you will be responsible for packing and shipping fees as well. Thank you for looking!

Cheers,

Bobby D

Getting Refocused

It's been quite a while since my last post. I have made a bit of progress since then. I've also been dealing with a very unpredictable limb. I've had so much volume change over the last several weeks. Every time I turn around my prosthetic will need an adjustment. It swells and it loses volume constantly all day. Lucky for me activity is the fastest way to stabilize this. Unfortunately because of the constant volume change I haven't been able to train, surf or shape as much as I'd like to. These are the joys of being a new amputee! My prosthetic team is amazing and bends over backwards to make sure I'm as comfortable as possible. These guys are great!

Currently I am writing this from the Philadelphia international airport. On my way back to San Diego after competing in my first full sprint triathlon with Team Semper Fi. The triathlon was, Tri For Our Vets in Sea Isle City, NJ. I'm originally from the Garden State so it was a perfect opportunity to see family and show them how able I am. I am extremely grateful that everyone came out and supported me and the Team Semper Fi guys and gals! Three good friends of mine came out and did the triathlon with me. Two of them were guys I served with and they did the whole thing with me even as I struggled to do the run. Before this day I had only ran 1.5 miles and at the tri it was 3.2. I was smoked along with my hip flexor which does most of the work on my amputated side. But I finished and that's what I set out to do! Hopefully they'll order me a running leg when I get back this week. The running leg is a lot lighter and has much more energy return than my everyday leg. I can't wait!

Things Are Changing!

Man I've been busy since my last post. Since then I've gotten a new socket for my leg and a new prosthetic foot, the vsp by Ossur. The VSP is life changing, seriously, it has a shock on it. It's like walking on a cloud compared to that pylon foot I was wearing. If you're an amputee and your reading this, even an above knee amputee and your health insurance doesn't cover this prosthetic it is worth spending the money on. I could talk about how great this thing is for hours on end, but I won't bore you with it anymore. We've move way down south, so Neal and Laura give us a shout we're right around the corner. Looking forward to grilling out and throwing back a few cold ones with you guys again! I've been setting up my new shaping bay and hopefully by Sunday evening I'll be slaying some foam, Willy and Brian your boards are first and thank you for being so patient while I rehab! Yesterday I got some new wheels, which is awesome. I got a gas guzzler and it's not to environmentally friendly but when you have 3 kids a wife a lab crutches a wheelchair and surfboards to bring everywhere a Prius just doesn't make sense, oh yeah and like 2 or 3 extra legs depending on what I'm going to do.

Also, yesterday a story aired on NBC here in San Diego about Military members choosing to have a delayed elective amputation. I was interviewed for this story. It was one of the toughest things I had to do since my amputation and honestly after it was done I regretted doing it. I think it was way to soon. I am doing great, but along with amputating my leg there is some emotional wounds that take a little more time to heal. Two and a half years of a roller coaster with surgeries and therapies need I say more. Also what this has put my family through. I can't speak for them but I know it's been a long road and it's not over yet. I've never had any regrets from getting my leg amputated and I already can sustain more activity than before my amputation. I have good days and bad days as expected. Thank you for your continued support, I couldn't be where I am at right now if it wasn't for all my friends, family and complete strangers that have been there for me along the way. And of course thank you Dr. Deben for your support as well, and thank you for understanding me. Cheers everyone and here's the link to that, interview.

Active Again!

photo: Rich Cruse

This past weekend was amazing! I swam in the Oceanside 70.3 Ironman for a CAF relay (Challenged Athletes Foundation). I met some amazing athletes, Micheal Johnston who is a Below Knee Amputee and paratriathlete and Melissa Stockwell who is an above knee amputee, paratriathlete and paraolympian swimmer. I got to see two of my mentors, both below knee amputees, compete which was awesome and they have been great role models during this past year. To be honest I was dreading waking up at 4:30 am on Saturday to swim 1.2 miles. I hadn't trained at all since my amputation in December other than a 1.5 mile swim in La Jolla Cove the previous Saturday and a half mile swim last Monday in the pool. The swim in La Jolla Cove helped me realize two things, I extremely dislike swimming in a wetsuit with sleeves and the water was cold enough to make my teeth feel like ice. I surprised myself and I think a lot of other people and did the 1.2 miles in 32 minutes 1 second!

Getting out of the water was a challenge. Although there was plenty of people there to help me, when they handed me my crutches my arms were so cold and tired I couldn't hold myself up, haha. I almost fell about 2-3 times.

Then Nico Marcolongo from Operation Rebound CAF came running down with my son John and they ran with me from the swim through the transition to my teammate who would continue on the bike. While crutching for what seemed like forever through the transition all of the age group triathletes were waiting in the corral to begin there swim. As I passed by everyone they continued to cheer me on and pat me on the shoulder or back of the head. It was an incredible moment and I will never forget it. I'll also never forget the way my son was looking at me, he was so proud. Here's a 4 year old who has really only known his father to be disabled and now he's running next to me through an Ironman transition with all of these people cheering for his Father. Freaking Awesome Right!

I plan on continuing swimming and I'm going to be attending a paratriathlete camp in May. This camp will teach me how to do a triathlon, and work on my running gait. By the way I haven't started running yet, I'll get there.

Cheers,

Bobby D

STOKED!

I was given a leg to surf with yesterday! So today I Surfed! It was so crazy to be out there on two legs again. Getting up was completely awkward. I can now longer drag that foot forward to get it in front of me. I don't know what I did to get it out there but it took a second or two longer than normal. It will be challenging to get back to the way I used to surf, but the more I go the faster it will come back. I had to go back to using a leash for now, it will wrap around my fake leg and I won't know cause I can't feel it and I'll eat it crap. I was able to cross step up the nose and back a couple of times too. I had a couple Cheater 5's with my fake foot! That was killer! Here's a few pics below that my wife took today, enjoy. Also, I met a guy that was down there with a 500mm Canon and he had some pretty sweet sequences that I'll post when I get them. Thank you to everyone for the continued support. Especially Dr. Pyo, Peter and Nate of the prosthetic department for taking care of me and getting me in a surf leg so soon!

My First Leg and Surf!

This week was HUGE! Tuesday I got my first prosthetic. I am so excited. This one is temporary until my residual limb loses the excess volume/swelling. I was doing so well that my Physical Therapist allowed me to take this home the following day. It is so great to be 6'2" again. I no longer sit in my wheelchair feeling like I am being looked down on anymore.

So Wednesday I brought this leg home and after a morning of appointments on Thursday my friends Danielle Burt (above knee amputee that shreds) and Summer Romero picked me up and took me for surf. I tried to kneel on my first wave but it hurt way to much, so I decided to stand on one leg on the next leg. After a few waves I really started getting the hang of it. I was able to stand for several seconds before losing my balance. Also I found a sweet spot to stand on with my one foot on my Model T and keep it in trim. It was an amazing day and I will never forget it and I look forward to going again.

Update to the Amputation Update

I may have spoke to soon yesterday. Tomorrow I will undergo a revision and incision & drainage. The revision will be to correct my tibia which extends past the bridge made with my fibula, google Ertl procedure if you're interested in the details. Incision and Drainage will be to address my wound which has not fully healed at 8 weeks after my surgery. The surgeon will take some cultures while in there to make sure there is no infection in there. This procedure will speed up my the healing process and get me in a prosthetic faster which is the ultimate goal. Hopefully I won't have to stay overnight, we'll have to wait and see.

Cheers,

BD
